Endorsing a Power BI content (Part 1/2)
🤵🏽 Analytics manager: Hey, I see multiple Power BI reports used by different teams across different workspaces which are using either the same or similar datasets.
Is there a way we could streamline these datasets and reduce the redundancy?
👨💻 Power BI developer: Yeah boss. We can do that using one of the features within the Power BI service.
In fact, we can reduce the time required for developing new reports and also ensure data integrity using this feature.
🤵🏽 Analytics manager: This looks like a great feature. Can you elaborate more on that?
👨💻 Power BI developer: Power BI service allows you to ENDORSE the content available in it to improve its visibility.
If a dataset is repeatedly used to build new reports with different visuals, this dataset can be promoted by the owner or a user of the dataset.
By promoting it, users who don’t have access to that dataset will be able to view the dataset and request access to it.
Instead of repeating the data cleaning and modeling process (which usually takes a long time), they can simply use this pre-built dataset to build a new report. It saves a lot of time and removes redundancy.
🤵🏽 Analytics manager: That seems like a huge time saver for us. So how will you promote a dataset?
👨💻 Power BI developer: Go to the Settings of the dataset → Endorsement → Choose Promoted → Check the Make Discoverable box. (refer attached image)
Now the dataset will be viewable by all users across the organization (in data hub) and in the Endorsement tab, we can see the Promoted symbol. (refer attached image)
