Are you looking to learn Power BI from scratch that too with zero cost?

Power BI is a tool which is in demand among the IT job market and adding this skillset to your repertoire will help your career move ahead by leaps and bounds. In this article, I’m going to share a set of resources and also help you master Power BI by helping you do projects using it.

If you’re a beginner in Power BI or intend to learn it, you may bookmark these resources.

CodeBasics — Sales Insights project

Begin with this “Sales insights” project by Dhaval Patel and Hemanand Vadivel in Codebasics YT channel will give you a fundamental understanding from why you’re using Power BI to what you can bring out of Power BI. Personally, this project created a deep interest in business intelligence. I’d done this project and shared it in LinkedIn almost a year ago. They’ve recently created an awesome paid course too.

You may consider this playlist as a sample and if you’re impressed by it, then you may go for their paid course too. You can also participate in the CodeBasics Resume challenge every month and winners get exciting discounts to their paid course too.

Microsoft Learn

The Microsoft Learn content for PL-300 certification (previously DA-100) is very useful for structured learning of Power BI. It contains lab session at the end of each module. I’d suggest you to learn more about each chapter in addition to the content provided by browsing in the internet for better understanding of each chapter. This will give you an insight into all the features of Power BI and also help you prepare for the PL-300 examination.

Data Science Tutorials Playlist

The above playlist by Data science tutorials YouTube channel has a video for almost every feature in Power BI. It’ll be absolutely helpful for beginners. It has 100+ videos containing well explained examples. It is also well structured, so as a beginner you’ll feel comfortable to learn in video format in case the Microsoft Learn content which is in text format is tedious to learn.

Alex the Analyst

This channel by Alex Freiburg contains every tool related tutorial to become a data analyst and he has recently created a playlist for Power BI beginners. The best part is that he will always provide you a video on guided project which you can add to your project portfolio.

Reference Channels

In addition to these, there are some YouTube channels where you can refer for specific solutions. Every time you are stuck in some problem, you may refer to these channels as they contain solutions to most common problems in Power BI. I’ll list them below.

Guy in a Cube

Avi Singh (PowerBIPro)

Arpita’s Tech Corner (specifically for DAX)

Curbal

KSR’s Datavizon (for interview preparation)

Chandoo

Havish Madhvapaty

Vijay Perepa

Practice Datasets

Also, you may participate in monthly data visualization challenges by Maven Analytics, FestMan™ Learning Hub, Enterprise DNA Ltd, Onyx Data for hands-on learning of Power BI as well as creating a project portfolio.

Maven Analytics data playground

Enterprise DNA challenges

Onyx data datasets

Festman Datahub

CodeBasics resume challenge

Disclaimer: Most of the datasets provided for practice will have simple data models with little data cleaning required. But in real world problems using Power BI, you may have to connect to data from multiple data sources, have complex data models and require a lot of data cleaning, even before starting the visualizations. But as a beginner these datasets will be super useful to create your first project portfolio.

Although Power BI may seem simple with easy to use UI, it’s true ‘Power’ (pun intended) can be understood when you work on real world datasets.

NovyPro

After creating projects in Power BI, the next step is to share with the public to view the reports. And here is NovyPro, a platform in which you can host your Power BI project portfolio and share it to the World. They provide you with a free Power BI service account too.

I hope this article has helped you to start learning Power BI. Do share it with your friends/colleagues if they are doing
