Are you trying to get into data analytics but not sure what a data analyst does in their day-to-day job?

Based on my experience, I’ve tried to come up with a very simple step-by-step process involved in building a data analytics project (descriptive analytics). Most projects handled by data analysts would go through the similar process below:

  1. Problem statement: You have a well-defined business problem.
  2. Data discovery: Explore and get access to the relevant data that will help solve the business problem.
  3. Data cleaning: Clean the data using the required techniques and available tools at your disposal.
  4. Data modelling: Bring the data together from various data sources you gathered and cleaned in a single data model. Also, establish relationships between them.
  5. Data visualization: Create required measures/KPIs and then build your visualizations/dashboards.
  6. Quality Assessment: Test the accuracy of values in the dashboard.
  7. Deployment: Deploy it to users by creating security groups and train the business users on how to use the dashboard.

Note: All these steps will happen in an iterative manner (Agile sprints) if the project is of greater size and impact.

Also, You will be involved in discussions with various stakeholders during each step such as business teams, data engineering teams, IT teams, Project managers, etc. Hence, along with technical skills, having good communication skills will help you excel in your career!

Hope this article has given you clarity on a typical data analyst job role.
