How to practice Power BI and build a solid project portfolio?

If you are a beginner in Power BI, by now you would have done some online courses to learn Power BI. The next and most important step now is to increase your proficiency in Power BI.

How to become proficient in Power BI?

Practice. Practice. Practice!

Step-by-step guide to build a Project Portfolio using Power BI

Here’s a step-by-step guide to practicing Power BI and building a solid project portfolio:

Step 1) Take a public dataset from the resources mentioned below.

Step 2) Go through the dataset and understand the data.

Step 3) Try to research and develop relevant KPIs pertaining to that dataset.

Step 4) Create a mockup of the dashboard using pen and paper. Try to find appropriate charts for each KPI.

Step 5) Open Power BI desktop and import the data.

Step 6) Execute the data cleaning and modeling activities(including creating measures/calculated columns) as per requirement.

Step 7) Create the dashboard as per the mockup and then optimize the visuals.

Step 8) Publish the report to the Power BI service and add the public URL of the report to your portfolio. (Suggestion: Use NovyPro to host reports)

Step 9) Share your work on LinkedIn and try to get constructive feedback. Implement changes (if any) based on feedback.

Repeat these steps for 6–8 weeks and you will have at least 6 projects in your portfolio.

Now, you have a great project portfolio that will be helpful to increase your career prospects.

Tips to build a good portfolio

Some tips while doing projects:

  • Use intermediate-level DAX functions (not just basic SUM, AVG, MAX, etc.)
  • Use features such as Bookmarks, Drill-through and Drill-down
  • Try to use advanced tooltips
  • Optimize the data model
  • Use simple yet appealing color themes
  • Participate in data challenges to see if you’re able to compete and win

I hope this helps you become proficient in Power BI!
