Power BI Service and Embedded Power BI
The major difference between Power BI Service and Embedded is that the way we consume the Power BI dashboard will be different in both cases.
Power BI Service is a cloud-based web application of Microsoft where we normally publish our reports and share them with the users. It can be normally viewed from browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, etc.
But what if you have a custom application or a 3rd party application where you would like to view your Power BI reports?
Here we can welcome Embedded Power BI!
Embedded Power BI, as its name suggests, allows you to embed your Power BI reports into other web applications. Instead of going to Power BI Service every time to view the reports, this allows you to consume the reports in your most used organizational application.
Types of Embedding
There are 2 types of Embedding concepts in Power BI:
- Embed for your customers (or) app owns data -
- In this method, your custom application will take care of the user authentication, while you can use Power BI in the PaaS model (pay-per-use subscription).
- The individual users of the application need not have Power BI licenses to see the reports.
- Ex: If you own an Angular JS (or) a Dot-Net-based web application, but want a flexible analytics dashboard, it’s easier to use Power BI infrastructure to achieve this.
2. Embed for your organization (or) user owns data -
- In this method, the user should have a Power BI Pro/Premium and needs to provide their credentials to sign into the application.
- This solution is aimed at large organizations that are building an app for internal users.
- Ex: A Power App containing a Power BI report embedded into it.
